  16. <p>    MANDY PATINKIN IN CONCERT: DRESS CASUAL. The edgy,
  17. high-energy star of stage (Evita) and film (Yentl) thrills
  18. Broadway with a brilliantly idiosyncratic styling of ballad and
  19. show tunes.

  21. <p>    THE ROAD TO MECCA. South African Athol Fugard directs and
  22. stars in his masterly drama of the artist as outsider, at
  23. Washington's Kennedy Center.

  25. <p>    HENRY IV, PART II. The darkest and most brooding of the
  26. Bard's histories is richly illuminated by the Oregon Shakespeare
  27. Festival at Ashland.

  29. <p>    SHOWING OFF. What ever happened to the witty little revue?
  30. It's thriving off-Broadway in this four-person jape at assorted
  31. cultural pretenses, including odious sing-alongs, the subject
  32. of the sing-along finale.

  35. </p>
  36. <p>    WHEN HARRY MET SALLY . . . he asked her: Can a man and a
  37. woman be friends without worrying about having sex? Billy
  38. Crystal and Meg Ryan spend a beguiling dozen years trying to
  39. figure it out.
  40. </p>
  41. <p>    SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE. Next question: Can a man and a
  42. woman be lovers without having sex? In Steven Soderbergh's
  43. elegant, poignant, very funny film, the answer matters less than
  44. the interplay of four congenially tortured souls.
  45. </p>
  46. <p>    PARENTHOOD. Didn't Tolstoy say that each unhappy family is
  47. funny in its own way? This brave and original movie, starring
  48. Jason Robards as curmudgeonly Grandpa and Steve Martin as his
  49. No. 1 son, piles up most of our worst parental nightmares in a
  50. single midsummer comedy. It really shouldn't work, but it does.

  53. </p>
  54. <p>    AUGUST 1914 by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (Farrar, Straus &
  55. Giroux; $50 hardback, $19.95 paper). This novel first appeared
  56. in English 17 years ago. Since then the 1970 Nobel laureate has
  57. added some 300 pages to his fictional but heavily researched
  58. saga of Russia's catastrophic involvement in World War I.

  60. <p>    POLAR STAR by Martin Cruz Smith (Random House; $19.95).
  61. Smith sets Moscow investigator Arkady Renko (Gorky Park) off on
  62. another bizarre case, this one on a fishing boat on the Bering
  63. Sea; one dead body leads to others along an arc of increasing
  64. menace and violence.

  66. <p>    FROM BEIRUT TO JERUSALEM by Thomas L. Friedman (Farrar,
  67. Straus & Giroux; $22.95). A Pulitzer-prizewinning Middle East
  68. correspondent looks back on the brutal realities of a region
  69. drenched in myths and bloodshed.

  72. </p>
  73. <p>    BENJAMIN WEST: AMERICAN PAINTER AT THE ENGLISH COURT,
  74. Baltimore Museum of Art. Period pieces today, these 52 canvases
  75. show what made "the American Raphael" (1738-1820) the toast of
  76. London and the first American artist to achieve international
  77. renown. Through Aug. 20.

  79. <p>    EDWARD HOPPER, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
  80. City. A major realist painter, Hopper (1882-1967) is also an
  81. enduringly popular chronicler of New England lighthouses,
  82. late-night cafes and other American vignettes. Through Nov. 5.

  86. <p>    SWING OUT SISTER: KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD (Polygram).
  87. Sophisticated jazz-pop with a British twist. Corinne Drewery's
  88. silky vocals and Andrew Connell's buoyant keyboards create
  89. expansive, richly atmospheric arrangements.
  90. </p>
  91. <p>    BODEANS: HOME (Slash/Reprise). Brand New is the title of
  92. one of this album's best cuts, but BoDeans fans will be cheered
  93. to know that the band's still doing what it has always done
  94. best: focused, aggressive rock that doesn't stint on spirit.
  95. </p>
  96. <p>    TIN MACHINE: TIN MACHINE (EMI). It's David Bowie, lying low
  97. with a new band that he helped create and whose rough edges he
  98. hones to a cutting edge.
  99. </p>
  100. <p>    THE JACKSONS: 2300 JACKSON STREET (Epic). Remember the
  101. address if you want to crash a party without leaving home. The
  102. Jacksons make hot soul but deliver it nice and cool.

  104. <p>TELEVISION
  105. </p>
  106. <p>    FATAL ADDICTIONS (NBC, Aug. 9, 10 p.m. EDT). The title
  107. refers to a range of American bad habits, from drugs to
  108. gambling. Host Maria Shriver will survey the problem in this NBC
  109. News special.
  110. </p>
  111. <p>    THE TURN OF THE SCREW (Showtime, debuting Aug. 12, 10 p.m.
  112. EDT). Amy Irving stars as the Victorian governess with a ghost
  113. problem in this new version of Henry James' famous novella. The
  114. hour-long drama launches Shelley Duvall's new series, Nightmare
  115. Classics.
  116. </p>
  117. <p>    ANYTHING BUT LOVE (ABC, returning Aug. 15, 9:30 p.m. EDT).
  118. Angst-ridden stand-up comic Richard Lewis, playing a magazine
  119. writer with a yen for Jamie Lee Curtis, made this midseason
  120. sitcom worth watching. Now it is back for a few weeks of reruns.
